Enoch's breakdown of business strategy is a must-listen for any architect looking to build a thriving practice. His focus on long-term vision and taking action on the important (not just the urgent) is gold for any entrepreneur.

Underbidding works IF the practice is, or can, keep growing. I used to work for such a practice until the UK financial collapse in 2007/8. The inability to cover costs became exposed and they had to reduce staff numbers to survive and on the 'last in first out' basis guess who lost out! The UK needs to extend the requirement under the Building Safety Act for 'competency" to mean appropriately qualified and registered/chartered for which a requirement is competence and those not meeting the 'competence' standard can be removed from the register/professional body etc. Cutting the scope of work and closely limiting the content of the service offered (lower headline cost) and offering loads of optional 'extras' so that clients can comprehend that what we do is costly. I've tried showing them that the value added over and above a non-architect is more than the cost of using an architect such that using an architect is ;less than free. However it seems that is so far beyond what they expect they just assume I'm not telling the truth, even when it has been demonstrated!

Dan D'Agostino's approach to building a luxury architecture brand is refreshingly honest and practical. He emphasizes the importance of a strong business foundation, efficient workflow, and understanding the unique needs and desires of high-net-worth clients. It's clear that he's not just designing homes, but crafting a luxury experience for his clients.

10:26 This is very well articulated, and unfortunately very common. One way to help justify this service to clients on the front end is to be a better story teller, with visual examples, of cases you have experienced on site that have either saved money, time, or project details that would have been otherwise missed or overlooked by the contractor.

The English flag is not racist of course, but only an unfortunate interpretation of it that is promoted by a nasty minority. Great Britain is the largest island in the UK and only contains most of England, Scotland and Wales.

This is interesting because as a hardcore AIA advocate being president of my local chapter in Florida I found this agreeable but also comical. I don’t pay $700 a year to rely on the AIA to help me with my business. I do it so that I have a platform to network and collaborate with other industry professionals, universities, and have fun with my peers. As I’ve been a member for 10 years now I’ve learned that the AIA actually has a lot of benefits that I hadn’t and still don’t take full advantage of. These include but aren’t limited to insurance, construction administration advice, contract documents, practice guidance, and legislation. I plan to maintain my membership because it’s a cheap investment to at the bare minimum carry the AIA acronym after my name, which carries a lot of weight and respect in the construction marketplace. When it comes to leadership, finance, business, and marketing education I absolutely invest in these so that I can constantly improve my single member LLC’s profitability so that I can be economically independent. Cheers, Rion!

I'd like to know what examples are there of firms that innovative in their business structures. I don't mean innovative design solutions. Perhaps innovation with their client acquisition, or offer package. Thanks again, Enoch.

This information is so important for the architecture community to understand. For too long I’ve watched firms think they are preforming well but really they are just getting by and are letting clients take advantage of them.
